Putignano Carnival, Italy
If your only experience of papier-mache is primary school art projects, the Putignano Carnival may come as a bit of a shock. Each year, teams of craftsmen compete to build the most elaborate papier-mache float for the grand Shrove Tuesday parade (which falls on 12 February in 2013). These allegorical creations range in theme from economics to drug culture to politics depending on the inspiration of the master papier-mache artist and are all on a scale that has to be seen to be believed.
