Best for liveliness: Buzios, Brazil
Average hours of daily sun: eight
Go to Brazil before peak season and you will find the same azure skies but without the fight for a room that comes in the-run up to carnival season from December to February. The city of Buzios is one of the country’s little known destinations, despite 321 days of sun. A three hour trip from Rio de Janeiro, the sunny getaway is renowned as the St Tropez of the country - without the millionaire price tag. Brigitte Bardot chose it as her favourite holiday retreat in the 1960s and people in the know have kept coming ever since. The city’s peninsula setting includes 23 beaches within an hour's walk of each other, each with a different theme. The result is a peaceful retreat from hectic Rio but with a fiesta on the bustling main street, Rua das Pedras, most evenings.
Find Rio de Janeiro flights and accommodation with ebookers. In Buzios rooms at Casas Brancas cost from £45 a night.
