Pie and mash

Aficionados can argue the merits of various pie and mash purveyors until the cows come home; one safe bet though, is F Cooke (9 Broadway Market, E8 4PH, 020 7254 6458) with its tiled interior, old-fashioned signage and flavoursome, home-made parsley liquor. Other East End favourites include G Kelly ( 414 Bethnal Green Road, E2 0DJ) - which also does a soya veggie variant and a good line in fruit pies - and Maureen's (6 Market Way, Chrisp Street Market, E14 6AH, 07956 381 216) now run by the son of the eponymous owner.
