Monument to love: the actor Ben Kingsley posing with his wife in front of the Taj Mahal
You've seen it on countless postcards, tea towels, book covers, t-shirts and key rings. But nothing prepares you for seeing the Taj Mahal in person. Completed in 1648, the tomb is made of dazzling white marble, decorated with fine Arabic calligraphy, delicate mosaics and intricate patterns inlaid with gems. As well as being a masterpiece of Indo-Islamic architecture, it is one man's poignant tribute to his dead wife. That man was the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, who also rests in the mausoleum.
