This monumental plaza marks the heart of Russia's capital, Moscow, and is the symbolic heart of the country. Many of the former superpower's most famous sites cluster around it, from the Kremlin to the president's residence. Here too are the iconic multicoloured domes of St Basil's Cathedral, commissioned by Ivan the Terrible in 1555, and Lenin's mausoleum, where the former leader's embalmed body has been on display since his death in 1924.
