Students have been receiving degrees since AD 859 from Al Qarawiyyin (or Al-Karaouine) University in Fez's medina in Morocco. Set up by a rich merchant's daughter, it is said to be older than even the universities of Bologna and Oxford, and earns its record by being the world's oldest operating, degree-granting university.
