The Angel Falls are a whopping 979 metres high in Venezuela's Canaima National Park, and the plunge is so great that much of the water evaporates before it hits the ground. They're named after Jimmie Angel, a fortune-seeking American pilot who 'discovered' them in the 1930s. Local Indians have known about them for, er, millennia.
