Monks created this labyrinth of tunnels in the city of Palermo, Italy, in 1599. Some of the older "tenants" here probably could have found work - had they needed it - in a George A Romero horror film. However, the complex has a special preservative atmosphere, which, together with highly efficient local embalming techniques, means many of the corpses remain more or less intact.
Even more macabre is the fact that many of the dead, as typically specified in their wills, are dressed in their everyday clothes. Perhaps spookiest of all is little Rosalia Lombardo, who died in 1920. To look at her you would think she had gone only yesterday.
