A guard stands at attention at Arlington military cemetery

Dating back to the American revolution, the oldest military burial ground in the US is a world away from the gloomy entombments of Europe. At Arlington, row upon row of neat, near-identical white tombstones stretch into the distance on a bright verdant backdrop. Arlington holds the bodies of more than 300,000 veterans and military casualties from every one of the nation's wars, plus the mortal remains of the assassinated president JFK and his brother Robert Kennedy.

Other notable bodies interred here are the third man to walk on the moon, Charles "Pete" Conrad, and a war hero-turned 1950s cowboy film star, Audie Murphy.
