As Highgate Cemetery is to London, Greyfriars is to Edinburgh

As Highgate Cemetery is to London, Greyfriars - albeit much smaller - is to Edinburgh. If you're a thrill seeker, take a City of the Dead tour after dark here, enter a pitch black mausoleum and learn why this is reputed to be the most haunted site in Europe.

Alternatively, see Greyfriars the comfortable way, from a window seat in the Elephant House cafe, with its grandstand view of the cemetery. JK Rowling once sat here and reputedly gleaned inspiration for the graveyard duel between Harry Potter and He Who Shall Not Be Named. On a more heartwarming note, Greyfriars is also the home of the famously faithful-to the-end pooch Greyfriars Bobby, but that's another story.
