And, finally, to probably the world's most beautiful mausoleum, the Taj Mahal. Built between 1631 and 1653 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, the structure is said to be the grandest love gesture in the world. Fast-forward 360 years to a young princess photographed, alone, in front of the grandiose tomb. The image, of Diana, Princess of Wales, came to be seen as a symbol of a failing marriage and future tragedy.
