The stories behind the tombstones in this archetypal wild west cemetery, filled between 1878 and 1884, make the period's violent and colourful history come alive. Interred here are Billy Clanton, Frank McLaury and Tom Mclaury, all shot at the OK Corral in 1881; "Three-Fingered Jack" Dunlap, killed during an attempted train robbery; Dutch Annie (d 1883), a brothel madam; John Alexander Gillespie (d 1882), who was sheriff of Cochise county for fewer than 12 hours before being shot while trying to arrest two suspected killers; and Louis Hancock (d 1879), murdered by the infamous criminal Johnny Ringo in a bar room brawl that allegedly began over a disparaging remark about a lady.
One much quoted epitaph reads: "Here lies Lester Moore, Four Slugs from a 44. No Les, No More."
