A row of crypts in Père Lachaise Cemetery, Paris

Père Lachaise houses three of the 20th century's most feral wild childs: Jim Morrison (1943-1971), lead singer of the rock band The Doors, who overdosed in Paris; the writer and professional wit Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), who slipped into the netherworld while sipping champagne and proclaiming: "And now, I am dying beyond my means"; and Isadora Duncan (1877-1927), the scandalous bisexual mother of modern dance, who was yanked out of her open-top sports car at speed and almost decapitated when her voluminous scarf got tangled in the wheel spokes.
