This is the connoisseurs' cemetery, perhaps the most famous of all cities of the dead. Never mind that the communist philosopher Karl Marx ("Workers of All Lands Unite", reads his monumental epitaph), the sensual sculptor Henry Moore, the sci-fi comedian Douglas Adams and the 19th century novelist George Eliot are buried here: Highgate is less about names than about atmosphere. With its labyrinth of Egyptian sepulchres, gloom of Gothic tombs and whole choirs of silent stone angels, it sums up the Victorian love affair with death better than any other burial ground of its time.
