'Our bones await your bones'... detail of a Portuguese bone chapel
We've heard of parishioners donating time to the upkeep of the local church but the Portuguese take the giving theme to extremes. There are several capelas dos ossos - bone chapels - around the country but the daddy of them all is at the Igreja Real de Sao Francisco, in Evora. Upon entering the chapel, a dreadful Dantesque inscription confronts you. It translates as "Our bones await your bones"; grinning skulls, tibias, fibulas and femurs from around 5,000 parishioners cover the chapel's walls and pillars. Two full corpses hang high on a wall.
