Where: On the French Riviera, close to the Italian border.
Worth the effort because... It's a great chance to see how the other half live. And once you've finished gawping at the yachts in the marina, there's one of the world's best aquariums and a surprisingly attractive set of high-rise buildings to keep you occupied.
The clincher: That famous Grand Prix circuit is just begging to be driven around in a hire car, isn't it? Or walked, for the more actively inclined.
Getting there: Fly to Nice, and take a short train journey from there.
