An eco-settlement in Tanzania

Who? John Vickers, government policy adviser-turned-hotelier, originally from Blackburn
Big differences: "My commute is a five-minute walk up the beach instead of more than two hours on a train to Victoria. There are no gas bills, we make our own electricity and pump water from a bore hole - so a really big difference is that we are independent from the grid."
Mafia Island loves? "I love the peace and quiet of our surroundings. We have no neighbours within an hour's walk of here and we love living by the sea - although we spend most of our time working and don't actually get to spend many hours on the beach!"
Favourite places: "Sitting in my bar, looking out to sea at sunset, makes all the hard work worthwhile. When I get the chance, it's great to go fishing at a choice spot we call the fish factory - so-called because the kingfish and giant trevally I caught on my first trip out there seemed to just jump in the boat. I've never been that lucky since, but I live in hope."
