For the most intrepid adventurers – including the man who swam (swam!) the length of the Amazon and another who rode a lawnmower across the US – completing one challenge only means the stakes are raised for the next.

Most hardcore travellers attempt such odd journeys to break records or raise money for charity. The rules are the same regardless: a long distance, an inconvenient form of transport and a thoroughly eccentric disposition.

So whether it is climbing mountains on a pogo stick or getting from Land's End to John O'Groats exclusively on public transport, let us pay tribute to the travellers who never do it the easy way.
