“Go to hell” will no doubt be a refrain this Halloween from householders finding yet another bunch of knee-high trick-or-treaters banging on their door. Or it may come as a warning from crusty doomsayers who still consider the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain – aka Halloween – an evil event.

In either case, wouldn’t it be nice to respond that you’ve actually been to Hell and that, in fact, it was great?

It turns out Hell can be a paradise for surfers or a tranquil haven from that other, real potential hell – other people. Humans have often given the devil’s name, or that of his fiery realm, to particularly spectacular landscapes. Who knows why: more often than not these hellish places are more like heaven on Earth.
