Travel surveys tell the same story over and over again: more Brits are spurning foreign holidays this year to explore their very own British Isles. The recession and the plunging pound are part of the explanation but there's another, surprising reason: dogs. Around one-quarter of British dog owners have chosen a holiday at home in order to take their furry friend with them, according to new research from Tesco.
They couldn't have chosen a better country. Britain is packed with dog-friendly destinations. And owners who pack their pets stand to save a bundle. Some 20% of dog owners spend more than £400 on kennelling their pet while they gad off on holiday, according to the Dogs Trust.
Finally, there's your pooch's psychology to think of. "Dogs love a change of scenery," confirms Clarissa Baldwin, chief executive of Dogs Trust.
What makes a dog-friendly destination? Non-snooty pubs are one factor, as are wild beaches with plenty of sticks and dog-walking trails in abundance. With recommendations from the Dogs' Trust, here is our list of 10 of the best holiday spots in Britain that welcome a wagging tail.
