Starting with the manatee – the shy Amazonian aquatic mammal given to farting a lot – the actor Stephen Fry and the biologist Mark Carwardine have been tracking down some of the world's most endangered creatures in the new BBC series Last Chance to See.
Theirs is a compelling mission and a reminder of the urgency of environmental destruction. However, it's not just animals that are under threat but extraordinary landscapes and indigenous human cultures fascinatingly different from our own.
Visiting the most threatened places on the planet even has its own name: "doom tourism". And it's not just exotic, faraway places that are in danger. Climate change even threatens to destroy the Alpine glaciers and great swathes of the picturesque Dutch landscape, for example.
