Gaudy luxury and soulless chain hotels are banned from Taschen's glossy new collection of Great Escapes Around the World. Each of the places to stay included in the weighty volume is distinguished by a powerful sense of personality and a commitment, through attention to detail, to creating a feeling of place.

That bespoke flavour sounds expensive but it needn't be. A night at the cheapest hotel in the collection, the bohemian Hotel Congress in Arizona, will set you back a mere £15. Rates at the Point, a former Rockefeller retreat in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, are, admittedly, something of a contrast: they start at £770 but, as you will see, here you really do get what you pay for.

So start planning your next amazing stay – or begin dreaming about it – with our selection from Taschen's greatest getaways around the world.
