Kalymnos is a new kind of sports-oriented holiday destination. Forget ski towns, villages here cater almost exclusively to rock climbers.

Of course, there are a multitude of other adrenaline options such as wind surfing, SCUBA diving among wrecks in the clear Aegean waters, caving, walking, and cycling to name a few. However, most visitors here come with one thing in mind – scaling the beautiful limestone cliffs all over the Greek island.

Masouri is the main climbing village, with the nearby towns of Armeos and Myrties also popular with climbers. The communities are close to the 900+ routes on the island. There is a climb for all ages and abilities here. Trails to the over 43 crags are well marked and the entire area has a park-like feel. Climbing is free, however most people are compelled to buy the well written if not overpriced guidebook for 35 Euros.

The images here cover most of the island, focusing on both the climbing and the picturesque villages peppering the island. It is an excellent holiday destination for anyone remotely outdoorsy. For those who might not be so adrenaline-focused, there are numerous cafes, bars, and lovely beaches on which to pass the time.
