British holidays are back with a vengeance. Commenting recently on traditional British breaks, the novelist DJ Taylor may have conjectured that “hell will turn out to be ... a Carmarthenshire traffic jam, the sands at Whitby in high season or Great Yarmouth pleasure beach” – but it seems the British public are increasingly not with him.
We may be cutting back on holiday spending, surveys suggest, but not on holidays themselves. In the face of economic uncertainty and our sickly currency, we are saving money by holidaying at home. Caravan Club bookings are up by 40%, almost half of the parents responding to a recent survey planned to take their kids on a traditional bucket-and-spade break and internet searches for British seaside towns are up 200%.
