It's official: Brits are the most badly behaved tourists in Europe. We are the messiest, the most complaining and the meanest tippers, a survey of European hoteliers by the travel company Expedia has found.

'Being voted the worst tourists in the world by our closest neighbours highlights the fact that the "Brits abroad" moniker is a label we still haven't managed to shrug off," Jonathan Cudworth, head of product marketing at Expedia.co.uk, pointed out.

Plenty of other recent surveys tell the same story. Some of our holiday sins are of long standing. That Brits continue to overconsume booze, for example, will come as no surprise. But new concerns have entered the list of touristic no-nos. Dressing like a porn star is one of them, as are environmental devastation and woeful geographical ignorance. Where's Egypt again?

We're not sticking our neck out if we say Brits could improve their European reputation. Here is our advice, garnered from travel industry professionals and the latest studies, on holiday faux pas the British should banish.
