War, what is it good for? Certainly not tourism. Only the most intrepid – or foolish – traveller would dodge bullets for the sake of a story to tell in backpackers’ hostels.

Still, where there’s a will, there’s a way and while the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office issues regularly updated warnings of dire situations in more than 50 countries, it cannot stop its citizens from risking their lives – whether as aid workers, business execs or tourists – in travelling to them. The FCO asks travellers to register their presence in a dangerous country using its Locate service, but warns that Her Majesty’s Government may well be unable to get them out of a jam.

There are currently more than 35 large-scale conflicts raging worldwide, yet some of the most acute no-go zones are also beauty spots or contain must-see historical monuments. Clearly, the most beautiful sites often bear witness to the least beautiful aspects of humanity.

Advice changes all the time – the Obama effect and the global economic crisis, for example, could alter things significantly. Check the FCO’s “don’t go” page before you make a move.
