Where: St Tropez, France
Made famous in the 1950s by starlets such as Brigitte Bardot wearing tiny bikinis, by the 1960s Plage de Tahiti had become known for topless sunbathing - possibly explaining why the famous self-tan brand chose to call itself St Tropez.
The northern stretch of Plage de Tahiti, Pampelonne, is now an unofficial nudist beach, with more naturists to be found to the south of the Liberty Bar restaurant. Plage de Tahiti attracts celebs including Naomi Campbell and Roman Abramovich - but don't hold your breath to see a naked celebrity. The mood is hedonistic but not that risqué.
