The Porch House, Bishop’s Castle, Shropshire
The huge, half-timbered house was built in 1564 - the year of Shakespeare's birth - and the basic structure of wattle and daub and huge oak beams survives, along with a more sober eighteenth-century extension at the back. Upstairs, the en-suite rooms are spacious, prettily furnished and full of character and interest; there's a large dining room for guests and a garden, and the owners also rent out two self-contained apartments in the house.
The Porch House, 33-35 High Street, Bishop's Castle, Shropshire, SY9 5BE.
Rates: Rooms start from £70.
