Cyclists riding through the vineyards in Loire Valley, France.
Helsinki, Finland
The other Nordic nations chose not to sign up to the euro, but Finland did - and it is being dragged back into the realms of affordability as a result. Its capital is a city with a distinctive sense of style - many of the buildings look wonderfully odd - while the Design District in the city centre is a hipster's shopping paradise.
Why 2012? Helsinki has been named as World Design Capital 2012, and there will be plenty of special events linked to that.
