Cyclists riding through the vineyards in Loire Valley, France.
10 Lampeter
Pocket-sized Lampeter is a university town for students who like to get away from it all. Literally. Two hours’ drive from Cardiff (there’s no station) and engulfed by luxuriant Welsh hills, it’s a small market town with some pubs, a curry house, a patisserie and not a whole lot else. If heaving nightclubs and city-slicking aren’t for you, then the eye-popping scenery, pristine countryside and splendid isolation of southwest Wales might just be. Just don’t expect to be able to buy frappuccino at 3am.
