Do you agree with Yorkshire being crowned 'best for UK holiday'?

The county has been named UK's Best Holiday Destination at the World Travel Awards, beating Cornwall and Devon among others.

The spotlight may have been on London this year, but Yorkshire scooped top place as the UK's best holiday destination at the 2012 World Travel Awards, held in Portugal. The region can add this to the other accolade of the year - it became the number one county for turning out the most number of Olympic gold medal-winning athletes.

Famous for such sights at the Yorkshire Dales and York Minster, the county has a solid offering of museums, natural beauty and great food sourced locally from its top-notch farms. And it's not just us domestic tourists trying to have a recession-friendly break who like spending time there, The Daily Telegraph reports that visits from international tourists have increased by a healthy 12%.

Future plans include hosting the Tour de France in 2016 and undertaking a massive eight-year eco-tourism project. But what do you think? Did Yorkshire deserved to win as Britain's best holiday destination? If so, tell us your favourite places in the county. And if not, tell us why not and which place you think should have won.

Whitby is the best place in North Yorkshire.  You have not lived until you have tasted Whitby Fish and chips.  Mind we do not want all the southerners coming up to our part of the world we have kept secret for so many years!

See that picture above? I live near there. Nice, isn't it.... Yorkshire, as the man says, is God's Own County!

Having been to both Malhamdale and Eskdale in Yorkshire this year, I can vouch for the great scenery and warm welcome.

I live in East Yorkshire and recently spent a week in the Yorkshire Dales for the first time ever.  We didn't realise what we was missing, beautiful scenery, great walks, lovely food and great hospitality from the folks who own the Green Dragon Inn at Hardraw.  I will definitely be going back and would strongly recommend.

Although I'm not a Yorkshireman, I live there, up on the Pennines above Halifax.  It's cold, bleak, rains a lot and there's a huge windfarm nearby; need I say more!  However, it really is beautiful here once you free yourself from the towns.  We recently stayed in Grosmont near Whitby and that's just as good.  So much peaceful countryside, no litter or larger louts, just great places to walk, eat, drink and sleep in peace.  Yorkshire ale's pretty good too!  Bring the dog; bring the kids, but wear your muddy boots!

Yorkshire and the Lake district have beautiful scenery, I lived in S.Yorks for a while. But the weather is generally better in Cornwall so for a few romantic days go up north for any longer and if you want sun go south...

Peoples tastes change. I went to Yorkshire over the Christmas period last year, it was beautiful.
I stayed in beautiful Whitby and then explored, into Heartbeat country where it is filmed together with the station for Harry Potter and around the unspoilt dales. Not a yob in sight and you were welcomed in every pub.

I have been to a number of foreign countries and in recent years I have realised that my own has so much to offer. I have never been to Yorkshire but having read some of these comments it would seem I should visit. I would say though that we are very lucky to live in GB; so much of which is second to none.
