9 British Museum
Open to "studious and curious Persons" since it was founded in 1753, this is one of the greatest museums in the world. You could spend days exploring its magnificent collections: highlights include the Parthenon Marbles and Rosetta Stone and the Egyptian mummies. Upstairs are the Lindow Man, preserved in a peat bog right down to the bristles of his red beard, and the Sutton Hoo treasure hoard.
