News that we're back in a recession is hardly revelatory - most of us have been feeling the pinch for years. So it's timely that this week, the Post Office Travel Money studies revealed which cities are the cheapest to visit and holiday destinations offer the best value. We've put together a list based on results from both studies, and have added one of our own - the Greek Islands - as the current deals are too good to leave out. Read on for 17 cheap holidays - your bank balance can thank us later.

.....and of course people don't get ripped off in Britain do they? Try booking a hotel in London for the Olympics mate! Try getting a ticket!

People put up with the inconvenience of going abroad because usually you get good weather. In Britain in "summer" you can bake or freeze, get blown off your feet or be soaked through. For a country with such unpredictable weather, we really don't have many indoor facilities for tourists. Only the Millenium Stadium and centre court at Wimbledon have retractable covers.

If we get a week of sun, a drought is declared, a few days of heavy rain, and we get flood alerts. Come on, we have to live like this all year. Why wouldn't you want to get away for a change?

This 'Study' is ridiculous. Dublin is the most expensive place I've been to. Its more like £6 a pint and all you do is drink. I Spent over a grand in a weekend there.

say back in recession again, even though it it never changed for many of us and ironically a guy from R.B.S yesterday was on the  radio giving out advice  yesterday on what we should do , with the money we dont have, do you think that although the article was informative and helpfull, they together with our great leaders of our country will be going on holiday  to the same places advertised as where we might consider but still cant afford.I was wondering if we are they

I completely agree with ian.e.  RBS are not even living in the real world when they can give their  one of the worst offenders with their bonus payments of 400 million following a 2 billion loss. I doubt most of their senior team know that there is a recession! How they have the brass neck to give advice when they don't have the first idea how stretched people are is a mystery

Just how well off are these so called advisers?

It may wellhave escaped their notice that there is rampant unemployment a  high cost of living, including fuel prices going through the roof.

The much derided pensioners who are supposed to be living 'high on the hog' have had a £5.00 rise, fantastic if the Tory party is to be believed, equivalent, less that one hour at minimum wage a week and half an hours overtime for low paid workers, Latte and a cake,

Having seen Cameron and Co swanning around the globe at our expense I bet that lot will not spend a week in a tent in bognor and hope it will not rain.

The prospect of millions that they will get away this year are nil.

Prats on the TV, you know who you are, advocating that we all holiday in the UK, and getting paid for the job, more than it would cost a family of four for a 2 week holiday,  maybe thay would fancy donating their earnings to some poor family so that they CAN enjoy what they are offering.

I need to lie down

If you want year round sunshine beer, at 1€ pint, 3 course meals for € 8 or less and only four hours away then Tenerife is the place for you.

Great Beaches plenty of night life with most of the bars providing free entertainment.

There also amazing places to visit Mount Teide being one of the best.

Don't know why it wasn't on the list.

Lol Czech currency (Koruna) is currently 'not' weak compared to the UK pound! If the writer was able to understand exchange rates, at the moment the Czech Koruna is at it's strongest it's ever been except for a holding strong at around 30Kc each year the pound loses about 2kc to the Koruna.  Four years ago it wa sat 35kc today it's around 28kc to the pound. What Prague does offer however is well priced beer and food, a nice meal will set you back 5-6 quid a 0,5l of beer goes for about 1,5 pound. The city is absolutely magnificent and offers a lot to tourists, there are many boat trips and tours of the city, and at night you can sit down in a relaxed caffe or have rocking night in one of the local pubs, it really offers that much.

Why anyone should want to travel abroad these days beats me. First, there is the never ending ques in the airport in addition to their over inflated prices. The airlines have numerous charges, surcharges, baggage costs, Government tax and fuel prices which are ridiculous. Also,in  many of the resorts businesses are increasing prices to make enough to last them over the winter. And finally, there are ever increasing threats these days of people being mugged, having luggage stolen and pickpockets. This is also in addition to tourists being ripped off by street sellers who charge more than the shops for CDc, DVD, handbags and other goods.
