A typical morning meal in Indonesia is nasi goreng – rice with mild curry, vegetables and chicken or prawns. Coconut milk is a key ingredient. As in many parts of Asia, the foodstuffs eaten for breakfast are similar to those eaten throughout the rest of the day.

Alternatively, try the floating market in Banjarmasin, Kalimantan province, for tropical fruit of a freshness and abundance to suit a whole pantheon of gods. Make sure you take photographs to fix your memories.
