Never mind the Dakar Rally, with its robust off-road vehicles and dedicated crews. This unlikely rally raid in India sees a pack of pimped out three-wheeled autorickshaws race over 1,000km from Chennai down to the country's southernmost tip every year.

Why anyone should want to travel that distance in a slow and notoriously unstable contraption that is guaranteed to break down several times en route is apparently not in question. Indeed the organisers have been so inundated with participants for the two-week challenge that they are adding an extra race from Chennai to Mumbai next year.
