Meet a king
No barriers. No security team ready to pounce. No ritualistic greetings. Tory Island, off Ireland's Donegal coast, has to be the simplest place on earth to come into contact with royalty. This wild and beautiful Gaelic-speaking island is the only place left in Ireland to elect its own King.
The current monarch is Patsy Dan Rodgers, a painter, who takes his ambassador's role very seriously. So much so that he is usually on hand to welcome travellers personally arriving on the ferry. He's even a common sight at the local pub.
Even without the prospect of becoming drinking buddies with royalty, it's well worth the trip to this rugged island for its spectacular cliff scenery and ancient monastic remains.
