A work of which the 16th-century art historian Vasari wrote: "Whoever has seen this work need not trouble to see any other work executed in sculpture, either in our own or in other times, by no matter what craftsman." Phew! Michelangelo's statue of David was finished in 1504, the result of three years' work. It is to be found in Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence.
