Memorably described by Lawrence of Arabia as "vast, echoing and god-like", Wadi Rum desert in southwest Jordan is a hauntingly beautiful maze of monolithic rockscapes. You need only watch David Lean's classic 1962 film of Lawrence's life to appreciate its arid charm. The area is now popular for trekking, climbing and camel safaris and is within easy reach of the ancient rock-cut city of Petra.
