"The most sublime spectacle in nature" (John Wesley Powell, 1909), aka the Grand Canyon, is our obvious choice for the globe's most gorgeous view. At a length of 446km, a width of up to 29km and a depth of 1.6km, it's an awesome abyss of mesmerising hues, rippling spires and rocks up to two billion years old. No wonder the park attracts more than five million visitors each year. They come to hike the Rim Trail, raft the Colorado river rapids but mostly just to gawp at one of the greatest views on Earth.
