Most beautiful place of worship
We struggled long and hard over this choice, but eventually settled for Iran's glorious Emam Mosque. Found in the city of Esfahan, it is smothered inside and out with the metropolis's trademark blue and yellow mosaic tiles, and its luminous colour alters with the changing light. Built in the 17th century, it has a 54-metre-high dome embellished with an intricate floral mosaic and a breathtaking 30-metre-high portal. The TV historian Dan Cruickshank names it as one of the greatest man-made treasures, and we would have to agree.
