Unhappy children on a flight are no picnic for the other people on board as well as the poor parents who have to look after them. Kids will be kids and parents will be parents - Some kids are brought up to respect other people and some are left to run wild
.In restaurants you can tell the well parented kids as you can on airplanes
All kids have tantrums , wriggle and become bored easily .and it is true that when younger kids neen to eat or be toileted it is an immediate need - - - - -the problem in most cases is the parents and how they deal with these issues , also other passengers should remember that we were all kids once upon a time

My experience of chidren on flights [and i have taken 5 of my own in times gone by] is that any unfortunate behaviour is almost always the result of inattentive parents; dare i say lazy even? It has been our misfortune only recently to suffer the parenting skills that include allowing the rest of the passengers to amuse/babysit as the little darlings are allowed continually to run up and down the aisles, stopping frequently in front of whoever, for amusement. This to me is akin to taking one's off spring to the supermarket for amusement with the same babysitting principles. Have children by all means but please be responsible for them.

To all those below complaining about children on planes:
Don't be so ignorant. At least all you have to do is ignore the noise. Grow up. Think about the parents who have not only the chilren to worry about but also the selfish passengers who are giving them dirty looks!
Most children will become bored or restless when couped up indoors on rainy day. Being couped up in a plane is much worse. Well done to all the parents who manage to engage their young children enough with some kind of activity and keep them quiet for even part of the journey!

while i appreciate your comments, maybe you should consider yourself on the flight and how you may look to people to other people.
As you may find that a family with children would have paid considerably more to the airline than yourself, therefore making families more appealing to the airline. maybe you yourself should holiday in this country to avoid being so selfish to hardworking parents who would like to show their children some of what the world has to offer.
I am lucky that my children used to travelling and yes they can get restless and seem annoying when they ask innocently for a stranger to let them out to visit the toilet or move in their seat to change the activity that they are doing.
My 8 yr old openly admitted to a lady that was sat by us that he in fact hadn't wanted to disturb her for the majority of the flight whilst she was sleeping, to use the facilities but was very sorry and couldn't wait any longer. So maybe gratitude for the children that may sacrifice for adults. The adults that they see relentlessly drinking throughout the flight and getting louder.
Forgive me but i presume you were an angel of a child that never cried, needed to toilet or to be amused?

kids will be kids.......we are going to greece either this year or the next year and i personally could not give two monkeys if there will be kids screaming or shouting cuz guess what folks THEY ARE KIDS
plus it wud take my mind off the couple thoursand mile drop downwards haha
i wud rather entertain them than shout or scream at them or the mother and father
the days of being a good upstanding member of humanity has long past
i say this to people who are flying or going to fly if u dont like the kids screaming or shouting put headphones in ur ears with music = peace and quiet or be a decent honorable human being and entertain them even if they are not ur kids cuz at the end of the day they are the next generation and we should respect that we are the older generation and we should know better cuz guess what we was kids once

Ok, hold onto your hair folks! Kids are allowed on flights - FACT. Kids will always be allowed on flights - FACT. Kids can't be left 'home alone' - FACT. Whether they cry or not appeasing them isn't always achieveable - FACT. Who cares who paid what for their flights? Not me! Ok I don't love to sit next to a screaming child but I have empathy for both them and their parents (who are hopefully trying to console them). If I am 'bothered' on a flight by a young child walloping about, I will approach their parents and ask politely if they can keep the child within their area of sight, in the hope that they will reprimand them if need be. If this doesn't work, I will ask the cabin crew to have a quiet word in the parents ear. Should this not work then I will give up and put up with it but not blame it on the child - the parents of some children are who shouldn't be allowed to fly, the kids would probably be a delight on their own! If you can't be bothered looking after your kids, teaching them right from wrong or even taking them on holiday with you then don't HAVE KIDS! Simples;)

Unfortunately quite a lot of parents fly totally unprepared & are inexperienced flyers themselves, hence their children get bored & play up...also remember most kiddies are pretty scared as are some of the parents. When my son was a toddler I had all manner of 'desk top activities' to keep him amused so had no challenges, we also spent a lot of the time gazing out of the window pretending we were on a roller coaster ( especially good when we hit turbulence !) I always packed his favourite drink which I saved for him to drink on landing to help clear/pop his ears....( major challenge with little people ) so it just needs organising & a little thought. Any input from the airlines should be welcomed by the parents & other passengers alike. Placing families at the back of the plane is a very good idea as the kids can make friends & the parents can sympathise with each other !

I've flown so many times I've lost count. If a screaming kid is on the flight so what? It's a flight for gods sake not life and death. Imagine the pain in some childs ears when with the change of altitude? There can be many reasons why the child screams. The parents are NOT to blame. I've had more problems with rude adults and selfish passengers than children. A screaming child is a screaming child, sympathy should be given to the child and the parents not nasty comments.

When flying I actually bother to tell my kids that there are people asleep on the flight, who have a busy day ahead and we should respect them, besides we need to save all our energy for our holiday. How is that offensive? Am I BAD for teaching respect and restraint? Is that selfish?
"Hardworking parents" Oh please, it was our CHOICE to have kids and if we dont work we will look like spongers to the rest of society.
As for showing them "what the world has to offer", get your kids to look out the window and see how many towns/villages they can count on the journey and the winner gets a prize (Not something Hello Kitty, cos they are doing just fine)". Keeps em quiet the whole flight as thats all there is. Look out there yourself and see that this planet is pretty much full.
I know this is a consumer society but so are locusts. By 2050 there wont be eough land on the planet to feed its population. This is why I take a stand and say we've got to stop constantly putting families and kids at the front of every advertisement just to make more profit.
As I said "My kids are not for sale" I have brought them up to care about more than themselves and how they look to society doesnt mean just giving money to the corporation with the biggest advertising budget.

What you need are more grumpy old gits on flights. I was on a night flight to Singapore, watching a film and accidentally laughed out loud. A man on the other side of the aisle leaned over and punched me on the arm without saying a word. I was 67 so what he would have done to a noisy child is anyone's guess.
