It's easy to get bogged down in the negatives of city life - the hectic commute, the pigeons flying in your face and the grit and smog, so competitions such the Urban Photographer of the Year Award are fantastic at reminding us of the good points. Cities made of glass, steel and concrete, and the life and energy that buzzes within them, are celebrated in the shortlisted and winning images.

The theme for this year's competition was 'cities at work' and submissions flew in from all over the world. Click on through to see these fascinating snapshots.
